The surprisingly easy (maybe even obvious) way I’ve been saving money.

Are you looking for a way to save money that is so easy it might be (painfully) obvious?

In this post I’m gonna share my simple trick to save you loads of money every month!

If you’re like me your smartphone is loaded up with all your favorite food and drink apps or just general shopping apps.

We all know that having apps can make life more convenient, but have you ever wondered if maybe it’s a little bit too convenient? The ability to store your payments methods, favorite orders and locations has made it easy than ever for us to spend ten, twenty, sometimes even thirty dollars on fast food with a few taps and rarely a second thought.

After a couple of particularly rough weeks were I admittedly visited the Golden Arches a few too many times, I decided that something needed to change.

So I took a moment to sit down, look through my bank statements and be honest with myself about my spending habits. After that I was able to decide that the root cause for me personally turned out to be the convenience trap. Being able to order exactly what I want, pay for it through my phone and avoid the stress and anxiety of human interaction? It’s almost a dream come true for me!

My plan was simple but brutal: delete all of my accounts. Not just the delete the apps from my phone (I would be too tempted to just head to the app store and reinstall them) but go into my settings on each app and manually delete my entire accounts. Is this dramatic? Maybe. But with the allure of convenience gone I have been forced to ask myself if every purchase is actually something that I want or something that I will regret putting the time, effort and money into.

I know what you’re thinking, “Isn’t this some just depriving yourself of the things that you like??” I hear ya, but how many times have you placed a late-night fast food mobile order only to regret it not long after? I’m not encouraging anyone to stop visiting their favorite food or coffee places, however I think that being more mindful and aware of where your spending habits will help you save time, money and the frustration of regretful purchases.

Bonus:

Another little perk to consider is that, I have found myself more willing to venture out of my comfort zone and try local places since I’ll have to get down from the car and talk to someone either way!

If you find yourself constantly looking for an easy way to save some money these days, consider reviewing your app purchases to see if you’re falling in to the convenience trap too.

In my next post I’ll discuss how I keep track of my kitchen inventory to stay on top of groceries.
